Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the option to challenge certain rulings made by the official, following the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can request.
Practical Application
A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
